My ‘Design a Life You Love’ Story

To give you a little background on it, three years ago my life changed irreversibly when my 15 year relationship with my partner ended. It had perhaps been on the cards for a while, but being an optimist and a very committed person, I didn't see it coming. So I was completely unprepared for the impact of this change upon me and my life.

Everything got impacted - my home, my work (including where I worked as I was a freelancer), my finances, my health, my relationships... I was also feeling pretty broken inside. This was compounded by a close relative passing away a few months into this period.

In order to survive I had to put emergency measures in place - putting my belongings into storage, finding a place to stay, setting up new systems to manage my finances, just doing the bare minimum with my work whilst all this was going on and then working 80 hour weeks to catch up.

It was only after this phase settled that I had enough mental space to stop and look around me to see where I had landed in my life. It was all such a shock really. My life was unrecognisable from the life I had before and I had lost the things I valued most.

So after a period of licking my wounds and allowing some healing to take place, I started to ponder what to do with my life. I was fully aware that I was responsible for sorting it out. There would be no knight in shining armour coming along to save me and make things right. It was up to me.

So I decided that if I was going to have to rebuild, then I might as well do it in a way where I actually created a life that I truly love and which is a perfect fit for me uniquely. So I started to use my coaching skills and my personal development knowledge to help me start to visualise what I wanted now. What I wanted now that my original dreams had been shattered and I needed to create new ones.

I began with allowing myself to dream and create a vision of what I wanted. From this I set about creating goals for myself. I learnt what my core values were and this helped me to understand myself much better. I invested time and energy into looking after my state and my relationship with myself. And little by little I got my life back on track and actually headed for somewhere much better than I was originally planning.

One of the key things I learnt was that before, I wasn't in tune with me and who I was. I didn't understand myself as well as I thought. I was strongly influenced by the partnership and everything I worked towards was for the good of that, and I lost sight of who I was and what I needed in order to feel happy and thrive.

I am grateful for this big change in my life as I now have a life that I enjoy much more than ever before and I am enjoying being with me. It's like being given a second chance to create the amazing life I was destined to live rather than the default life I settled for.
