Let’s talk about procrastination…
Let's talk about procrastination... The act of inaction. Avoiding or putting off doing things that are going to serve us in some way, but we sidestep or talk ourselves out of doing it.
I am a coach. I know all about this stuff. And yet I still have my own stuff to work on with this!
I have been putting off going through my bags and boxes of paperwork for years. I just never got around to clearing up the mass of paperwork that was growing in my wake as I was focussed on moving forward.
Whenever I did stop to take stock of it, it felt like such an overwhelmingly big job and I didn't really want to spend my time and energy on it.
The older stuff moved house with me 9 years ago and then lived in a storage unit. I then gathered more paperwork over the years as I did training, self-development and ran my business.
I didn't realise until recently just how much all this stuff was weighing on me.
So last month I stopped putting it off and made a start sorting it all out. Today I got to the bottom of the last bag that hadn't been looked at in years!
This got me thinking about procrastination...
When you are procrastinating... there is often either something you are avoiding going towards doing or achieving, or something you are avoiding moving away from.
~ It could be your beliefs or perception that are holding you back...
~ It could be a misalignment with your core values that is getting in the way...
~ It could be fear on some level causing the inaction.
Have you ever thought about why you are holding back from moving forwards?
So often I see clients beating themselves up for procrastinating. They use it to build the case for seeing themselves as not doing good enough or not being good enough.
But in my experience, this is unfair as I have found that there is always more to it when you look beneath the surface.
Procrastination is a symptom not a cause
The next time you notice you are procrastinating, instead of blaming yourself and feeling bad about not taking action, stop and consider what is really going on with you.
Take the time to explore what the real reasons are for stalling. Once you know this you can then make an informed decision about what to do next.
